ESO 31st Young Soloist Competition 2018

The Eastbourne Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce
the results of the first round of the 2018 competition.

This competition is now in its 31st year and has yet again been of a very high standard. The judges were given a very difficult task in choosing between many outstanding performances. This is a concerto competition and the judges were looking for competitors who performed programmes that demonstrated their soloistic virtuosity and musicality, as well as the ability to work well with their accompanist. They also took into account the ability to perform a contrasting programme both in style and period.

The five finalists are

Sirius Chau – Flute

Elodie Chousmer-Howelles – Violin

Pui Yee Lau – Piano

Lucilla Rose Mariotti – Violin

Freya Spence - Clarinet

Prizes for the best performances by a competitor under the age of 18:

The Duke of Devonshire award and a prize of £300 – Lucilla Rose Mariotti

The St Cecilia Bequest and a prize of £250 – Amber Emson

We would like to express our thanks to all those who took part, many of whom travelled long distances.  There were a large number of very high standard performances over the course of the two days, and it was a pleasure to meet you all.

Our thanks also go to all the accompanists who performed to such a high standard, and so enhanced the quality of the competition, especially to our resident accompanist Daniel King Smith who accompanied more than half the performances.
