ESO Young Soloist Competition 2017 ESO Young Soloist Competition

ESO Young Soloist Competition Final, 2pm, Birley Centre BN21 4EF on Sunday 29 January 2017

The final round (£8 on the door; no tickets in advance) will comprise the five finalists who will present a
20-minute performance of two contrasting concerto movements

The ESO is pleased to announce the results of the first round of the 2017 competition which took place on
Saturday and Sunday 7 and 8 January

This competition is now in its thirtieth year and has yet again been of a very high standard

The judges were given a very difficult task in choosing between many outstanding performances
This is a concerto competition and the judges were looking for competitors who performed programmes that demonstrated their soloistic virtuosity and musicality, as well as the ability to work well with their accompanist
They also took into account the ability to perform a contrasting programme both in style and period

The five finalists are:

Hannah Corcoran (saxophonist)
Edward Leung (pianist)
Charlotte Saluste-Bridoux (violinist)
Samuel Taber (bass trombonist)
Coco Tomita (violinist)

The prizes for the best performances by competitors under the age of 18:

Duke of Devonshire Award of £300: Coco Tomita (violinist)
St Cecilia Bequest of £150 each (jointly awarded): Caleb Curtis (cellist) and Amber Emson (violinist)

We would like to express our thanks to all those who took part, many of whom travelled long distances and endured disruption on the railways
There were a large number of very high standard performances over the course of the two days, and it was a pleasure to meet you all
Our thanks also go to all the accompanists who performed to such a high standard and so enhanced the quality of the competition

The winner will play a concerto with the Eastbourne Symphony Orchestra
